What experience do you have with cases like mine?
Powers Law Group opened in 2005 as Powers & Costeck. Since then, our criminal defense attorneys have represented thousands of people charged with many different types of crimes. Their extensive expertise and knowledge in the law resulted in many favorable outcomes, whether that be a not guilty verdict in a jury trial or a negotiated plea deal. Prior to becoming a defense attorney, Mr. Powers was a district prosecutor for Skagit County. He is familiar with the other district prosecutors and the judges in Skagit County. Ms. Gill-Sekhon worked as a public defender before joining private criminal defense firm. Both lawyers work hard and diligently to get the best outcome for their clients. They understand the legal complexities of different cases and truly care about each client’s case.
What are the potential outcomes for my case?
The potential outcome of your case varies depending on your criminal history. The worst-case scenario would include potential penalties like jail time, fines, or probation. However, the best-case scenario could be a dismissal or a plea bargain. You can ask about the potential outcome of your case and the attorney usually is able to give you his best estimate depending on your case and criminal history.
For example, in Skagit we have a unique program called the One Day Offender program for drivers in Skagit County – typically an option for first time offenders. This is an alternative to jail that allows jail time to be served in a dormitory located at the Skagit County fairgrounds. You must not have any recent felonies or committed any violent crimes. This program is limited to 2 days maximum. The program usually runs only a few times a year so you would have to schedule in advance.
How will you defend my case and what are the possible strategies?
Typically, Mr. Powers and the client will have an initial meeting and discuss strategy for the case. This may involve challenging evidence, negotiating plea deals, or preparing for trial. Strategy is dependent upon the type of case and prior criminal history.
What are your fees and how are they structured?
Financial transparency is crucial. Typically, our firm does a flat fee for a case. The amount depends on what type of case. We use retainer fees and hourly rates for the felonies. There can also be additional costs like court filing fees or expert witness fees. You may also ask our firm about payment plans.
How will you communicate with me and how often can I expect updates?
We communicate with clients via email and telephone. We schedule meetings when clients need to review documents, or the client would like to speak to the attorney. We send email reminders of court dates and other information we may have regarding the case. We ensure that our clients are well informed on what is happening in their case.
